Javi Climent, coach of UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, has spoken about a potential fight between his fighter and Islam Makhachev.
“We want the fight against Makhachev. It’s a clash between two legends — that’s exactly what we’re aiming for: to keep beating legends. Ilia plans to become the greatest fighter in history. I hope this fight eventually happens,” journalist Alvaro Colmenero quoted Climent as saying on social media.
Topuria last fought a year ago. In January 2025, he faced Brazilian Charles Oliveira and knocked him out in the first round. Overall, he holds a perfect record of 17 wins in 17 fights.
Topuria’s next opponent is expected to be American Justin Gaethje, who claimed the interim lightweight title after defeating Paddy Pimblett by unanimous decision.
