Last year, Paul stepped into the boxing ring for one of the biggest challenges of his career when he faced former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. Before that fight, however, the American had tried to arrange a bout with Ngannou, but the Cameroonian reportedly turned down the opportunity.
Now, Ngannou appears open to the idea.
He is set to return to MMA on May 16, when he faces Philipe Lins in the co-main event of a card headlined by a fight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano. The event is organized by Most Valuable Promotions, the promotion founded by Jake Paul, and will be streamed on Netflix.
During the press conference, Ngannou was asked about a potential fight with Paul, and his answer was direct.
“No, I’m not interested in fighting Jake Paul,” Ngannou said. “I’m interested in beating him up. Not fighting him.”
As the promoter of the event, Paul was also on stage and quickly responded to the former UFC champion’s comments.
“I’m ready. I’ve always been ready,” Paul said. “You were the option before Anthony Joshua, but you ran. And I bet you didn’t think I’d last longer against him than you did. Boxing is different. I’d love to see that fight one day.”
