Colby Covington says he's open to fighting Bo Nickal – but only if it happens at welterweight.
Nickal recently accused Covington (17-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) of turning down a fight at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14 at the White House. However, Covington told MMA Junkie he never received such an offer from the UFC. Nickal was instead matched with Kyle Daukaus, though the bout has yet to be finalized, leaving the door open for Covington to potentially step in.
Nickal (8-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) also claimed that he and Covington currently weigh the same — a point the former interim welterweight champion quickly turned against him.
"All right, bozo. I know you're a big fan of weight classes and refuse to wrestle a 50-year-old man (Yoel Romero) that was six pounds too heavy," Covington said on his YouTube channel. "We all know someone of your moral superiority would never try to have a weight advantage in a fist fight. You keep talking about us being the same weight, which is honestly refreshing to hear because I'm about 190 pounds right now and can get down to 170 without a problem during a full camp. So if we're the same weight like you claim, that means you're around 190 pounds right now and should be able to cut to 170 as well.
"I propose we do this in a weight class where one of us is ranked and where there are actual stakes. So how about bringing that stupid ginger bowl cut down to 170 pounds, and I'll grant your wish to fight the biggest name in the welterweight division? We could even do it this summer if you want.
"But let's make one thing crystal clear: I'm not going to take away an opportunity from someone who, unlike you, earned his spot on a big card the hard way — like Kyle Daukaus. He's 10 times the man and fighter you could ever be. You're just a competitor, bozo. You're not a fighter. Everything has been handed to you on a silver spoon. Nobody likes you because you're a spoiled brat, and nobody respects you because you're a quitter. We all saw the real you when you sat on the stool against the Dutch grappler (Reinier de Ridder). Daukaus will bring that same quitter out of you on the White House lawn.
"The fact is, I don't need to fight you. You need to fight me because I already exposed you with truth bombs right to your face at the RAF press conference. You wouldn't be throwing a tantrum or saying my name if you weren't such a fragile, narcissistic crybaby."
Covington also claimed that the only offer he has received from the UFC was a potential fight against the winner of Mike Malott vs. Gilbert Burns, who headline UFC Winnipeg on April 18.
