Michael Johnson eyes redemption after knockout defeat

Michael Johnson stays defiant despite brutal UFC 326 knockout

Michael Johnson isn’t going anywhere.

The 39-year-old lightweight veteran suffered a second-round knockout loss to Drew Dober at UFC 326 earlier this month. Despite the setback, Johnson (24-20 MMA, 16-16 UFC) showed resilience, taking to Instagram to address the defeat after winning the opening round on all three judges’ scorecards.

“Last week was a tough one to take,” Johnson said. “Everything was going so well… and I guess that’s when things can go wrong, right? When everything feels just right.”

Johnson was dropped by a powerful left hand but was quick to credit Dober, the UFC lightweight division’s all-time leader in knockout victories.

“It wasn’t a fluke,” Johnson said. “It wasn’t luck or anything like that. He caught me clean on the chin. I made a small mistake, got a little too comfortable, and I paid for it. Drew fought a smart fight—he stayed patient and handled the shots I was giving him, just a few jabs here and there.

“I didn’t fight my fight at all. Maybe my mind was all over the place. Maybe it was the back-to-back camps, the tough weight cuts—who knows? But at the end of the day, I went in there and I lost.”

The loss snapped Johnson’s three-fight winning streak, which included a notable upset victory over Daniel Zellhuber at UFC 318. Still, the Kill Cliff FC fighter remains determined.

“We may have lost some battles, but we’re in this for the war—and we’re going to win the war,” Johnson said. “I’m not going anywhere. Not anytime soon. I’m a winner, and I will win. There are rematches I want back—definitely the Gaethje fight, and this one too. It all came down to a small mistake, and in this sport, small mistakes can have big consequences.

“Last week I felt emotional—down, disappointed, even embarrassed—but now I’m back on track. Time to shake it off and get back to work.”
