Jorge Masvidal is interested in a fight with Leon Edwards, but only if the UFC is willing to meet his financial demands for the long-awaited grudge match.
The rivalry between Masvidal and Edwards goes back years, most notably to their backstage altercation at a UFC event in 2019 — one of the most memorable moments in MMA history. Masvidal, the original BMF champion, has repeatedly expressed interest in returning to the octagon, and Edwards remains at the top of his list.
Speaking on "Deep Waters," Masvidal said discussions with the UFC have been ongoing, but the two sides have yet to agree on money.
"It's low-hanging fruit for the UFC," Masvidal said. "Just give me what I'm asking for, and we're good to go, man."
Masvidal said negotiations have been dragging on, mainly because of the UFC's approach to deals.
"We've been talking for a minute, it's just that we haven't landed on that thing," Masvidal explained. "You guys know better how the UFC works. I love them to death, but man, they make you work for every single thing. It's always not quite what you wanted it to be a lot of the time, but we'll get something done."
Retired UFC star Dustin Poirier, who was also appearing on "Deep Waters," suggested that a Masvidal vs. Edwards bout could take place during this year's UFC International Fight Week in July — an idea Masvidal seemed open to.
"If they give me the Leon fight, I would get down to 170 by tomorrow," Masvidal said. "I would like that fight. He doesn't have anything scheduled."
Nothing has been officially announced yet, but Edwards has recently been linked to a potential appearance at UFC 329 on July 11 in Las Vegas. Veteran welterweight Daniel Rodriguez recently claimed he was offered a contract to fight Edwards, and that he has already accepted while waiting for Edwards to respond.
