President Donald Trump was urgently escorted off the stage during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after security responded to a report of a suspected shooter outside the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.
The situation quickly escalated, with some attendees seeking cover while Secret Service agents took positions inside the venue. Among the guests was UFC president Dana White, who later described the experience.
“It suddenly got loud. Tables were being overturned, armed men came in yelling ‘Get down!’ I didn’t get down. Honestly, it was a pretty crazy experience. We were sitting close to where the president was, and at one point I thought the shooter was somewhere near us,” White told USA TODAY.
According to him, security personnel acted swiftly and searched the area around the tables. Ultimately, there were no reports of injuries.
There is still no officially confirmed information about the suspect, but according to a statement from Donald Trump, the individual has been detained. The event is expected to be rescheduled within the next 30 days.
Trump’s appearance at the dinner was his first in more than a decade and his first as a sitting president.
