No space, no mercy: Juan Diaz targets Wellmaker with pressure at UFC Vegas 117

Juan Diaz is stepping into the UFC spotlight in a big way — and there’s nothing ordinary about his debut.

The Peruvian won’t be easing into the octagon against another newcomer or opening the night on the prelims. Instead, Diaz (15-1-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) finds himself on the main card of UFC Fight Night 276 (Paramount+), setting the stage for the evening’s biggest fights. Across from him stands highly touted prospect Malcolm Wellmaker (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), in what promises to be a serious test right out of the gate.

Diaz believes he has exactly the style and mindset to seize the moment.

“If I had to sum it up in one word, it’s ‘pressure,’” Diaz said through an interpreter during Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 276 media day. “I’m not going to give him any space. It’s not about what he does — it’s about what I can do. I’ve focused a lot on my own game and I’m ready to use every aspect of MMA. We’ll strike, we’ll grapple, we’ll wrestle. I’m going to pressure him constantly. I’m prepared for all three rounds, but I don’t think this one goes to the judges.”

Some see the matchup as a chance for Wellmaker to bounce back from the first loss of his professional career. Diaz, however, views it differently — as the perfect opportunity to launch his own run in the UFC.

“I got really excited — really excited,” Diaz said about the fight. “He’s a very good fighter, a lot of hype around him, and he’s got power. So yes, it’s a great challenge. But being placed on the main card for my debut means something. If the UFC is giving me this kind of test, it’s because I can pass it. I’m here to win and to make my name in the UFC. ‘Pegajoso’ is here to stay.”
