UFC veteran Nate Diaz suffered significant injuries during his fight against Mike Perry at the MVP MMA 1 event in California.
According to renowned cutman Jacob Duran, who worked in Diaz’s corner, the fighter required a total of 20 stitches and 15 staples to close the cuts on his face after the bout.
“He needed 15 staples and 20 stitches overall,” Duran revealed. “He got beat up. Perry was too strong for him. I always watch fights like a judge, and at that point Nate was losing badly.”
Duran also stated that, in addition to the severe cuts, Diaz suffered a broken finger during the fight, while his nose was likely broken as well.
“The cuts were really bad, the bleeding wouldn’t stop. Blood was running into his eyes and he could barely see,” the cutman explained.
It was Duran himself who pushed for the fight to be stopped after the second round.
“Nate thanked me. It was the right decision,” he said. “My job is to protect the fighter, and that’s exactly what I did.”
The bout between Diaz and Perry was stopped during the break between rounds two and three, with Mike Perry being awarded the victory by technical knockout.
After the fight, Diaz said he wants a rematch as soon as possible. However, the California State Athletic Commission handed him a 180-day medical suspension due to the injuries he sustained.
