During a visit to Dublin's historic Crumlin Boxing Club two months ago, I sat down with head coach Phil Sutcliffe to dissect the mechanics of Conor McGregor's striking. It was there that Sutcliffe revealed a unique piece of gym lore: coaches and fighters at Crumlin explicitly call this signature combination "The McGregor."
The sequence begins with Conor leaning to his right to throw a lead right uppercut, immediately followed by a powerful left straight. Sutcliffe clarified that this isn't a textbook technique the gym taught him. Instead, it is an original, instinctive creation that McGregor came up with himself, which has now earned his name back at his home gym.
The brilliance of the shot lies in its deception, splitting the guard from a low angle before blinding opponents with the straight. McGregor has famously utilized "The McGregor" at the highest level, landing it to dictate the pace against Max Holloway and to pierce the defense of Khabib Nurmagomedov.
