Umar Nurmagomedov Won’t Wait for a Title Shot: ‘I’ll Beat Them All’

Usman Nurmagomedov insists his cousin Umar has no issue taking on rising bantamweight contender David Martinez, despite many expecting him to face a higher-ranked opponent.

Umar is scheduled to meet Martinez in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 282 on July 25 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The matchup comes as the Dagestani standout continues rebuilding momentum following his unsuccessful bid for the UFC bantamweight title against Merab Dvalishvili earlier this year.

Since that setback, Umar has responded with consecutive victories over Mario Bautista and former champion Deiveson Figueiredo, putting himself firmly back in the title conversation. Nevertheless, the UFC opted to pair him with Martinez, who is still establishing himself among the division's elite.

According to Usman, rankings and name value are not a concern for Umar. He revealed that his cousin immediately accepted the bout offer, viewing it as another opportunity to stay active and continue his march toward championship contention.

Usman explained that Umar's mindset remains simple: keep fighting, keep winning, and leave no doubt about his place in the division. Whether the opponent is a top-five contender or a newcomer to the rankings, his objective remains the same.

The title picture at 135 pounds could become clearer in the coming months, with Dvalishvili expected to settle his rivalry with Petr Yan. Until then, Umar intends to focus solely on his own performances.

Usman believes an impressive showing against Martinez—especially a decisive finish—could force the UFC matchmakers to take notice. In his view, Umar remains one of the division's most dangerous fighters, and another dominant victory would strengthen his case for a future championship opportunity.
