Adversity Breeds a Champion: Dasuyev Survives Early Scare to Capture ARES Gold

PARIS, FRANCE — Championship fights rarely go exactly to plan, and Belgium's Alvi Dasuyev had to dig deep to keep his perfect record alive. Headlining ARES 41 at the Adidas Arena, "The Spartan" pushed his flawless record to 9-0 and captured the interim ARES Welterweight Championship against France’s Mohamed Soumah—but he had to survive a major scare to get it.

Before this matchup, Dasuyev—a proud Belgian fighter of Chechen descent—was known almost exclusively as a dangerous, explosive striker. However, Soumah completely disrupted that narrative early on, catching Dasuyev flush with a heavy shot during a wild exchange on the feet.

Stung and forced to adapt immediately, Dasuyev showed incredible, split-second decision-making. Recognizing the danger of continuing the stand-up battle, he abandoned the striking exchange and leaned heavily on his wrestling, changing levels to drive Soumah down to the canvas. Once on the floor, Dasuyev neutralized the danger, methodically worked his way to a dominant position, and locked in a tight rear-naked choke for the first-round finish.

What makes his well-rounded skill set so impressive is his unique journey. The 24-year-old actually played football growing up and didn't even start training MMA until he was 17. Despite having no traditional background in a single martial art, he has developed elite skills in all areas of the game.

Even though he was openly disappointed with getting rocked on his feet, overcoming that adversity under fire proved his championship mettle. Now sitting at 9-0, Dasuyev is officially knocking on the UFC door.
