Hearn vs. Bisping: Boxing Promoter Clashes with UFC Hall of Famer Over Fighter Pay

Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn has issued a direct public challenge to UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping, criticizing the former champion's stance on heavyweight titleholder Tom Aspinall. The dispute emerged after Bisping publicly questioned the duration of Aspinall’s competitive absence following double eye surgery, contrasting it with his own historically rapid returns from severe eye injuries. Hearn reacted sharply to the commentary, accusing Bisping of prioritizing corporate loyalty over athlete solidarity.

During a broadcast interview with The Ariel Helwani Show, Hearn categorized Bisping as an institutional mouthpiece, stating, “Bisping is totally and utterly a company man. He’s on the payroll.” Hearn expressed disappointment that a former fighter would criticize an active athlete's medical recovery timeline, asserting that veterans should actively advocate for enhanced fighter protection and compensation rather than defending promotional narratives. To address the disagreement openly, Hearn formally extended an invitation for a live, televised debate concerning UFC contract structures and athlete representation. 

Bisping subsequently addressed the criticism, defending his comments while dismissing the necessity of a formal debate. The UFC commentator clarified that his original observations were centered on the reality of existing contractual obligations rather than a desire to limit Aspinall's earning potential. He stated that his primary objective is to see the champion return to active competition during the peak years of his athletic prime. The public exchange highlights the broader, ongoing tension between Matchroom’s expanding commercial talent management division and established UFC promotional entities.
