UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland has taken a much harsher stance than many others regarding Dustin Poirier's recent personal issues.
Poirier recently discussed the circumstances surrounding his arrest for public intoxication at Atlanta International Airport, revealing that emotional pain stemming from his father's homelessness, combined with the challenges of adjusting to retirement, has left him battling depression.
While many within the MMA community have expressed sympathy, Strickland believes Poirier needs a different approach.
Speaking on his Instagram Stories, Strickland dismissed the idea that someone in Poirier's position should be consumed by depression.
"I know a lot of people won't agree with me because everyone says male depression is real," Strickland said. "But if you've built a successful career, have money, and a family, I don't think that's an excuse. There are people fighting for their lives every day who would give anything for another chance to be here, while you're standing there focused on how unhappy you are. You need to stop feeling sorry for yourself."
According to reports, Poirier became involved in several confrontations with airline employees before allegedly challenging an airport police officer to a fight. The incident ultimately resulted in his arrest by the Clayton County Sheriff's Office in Georgia on a charge of public drunkenness.
