The reasons behind a fighter's return to the cage often run much deeper than titles or wealth. Following the events of UFC 329, where Conor McGregor suffered a devastating 69-second TKO loss to Max Holloway after fracturing his right knee, former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz provided a raw, firsthand perspective on the Irishman's true motivations and the steep psychological hill he must now climb.

While many fans and analysts claim McGregor lacks competitive hunger due to his immense fortune, Cruz strongly disagrees with that narrative. Speaking on the UFC 329 Paramount+ Post-Show, Cruz stated that McGregor did not return for financial gain. Instead, he believes McGregor came back to "save his own life" from the very money and chaotic lifestyle he has been living. For an elite athlete, the fierce discipline of a training camp often serves as a necessary shield against personal struggles and bad habits.

Because the fight ended so abruptly, McGregor missed the chance to let out his built-up energy, "demons," or whatever internal battles he was fighting. Cruz, who famously survived multiple career-altering ACL tears, warned that the absolute hardest step for McGregor is the impending recovery period. Being stuck on a couch, watching your body change, and facing your own reflection without the daily escape of martial arts is a uniquely dangerous mental space.

Ultimately, Cruz notes that "fighting can't solve everything." This injury leaves McGregor right back where he started before booking the matchup, forcing him to sit with himself and find answers outside of combat.
