Right after the first official faceoff between champion Islam Makhachev and challenger Ian Machado Garry, Garry’s young son, Leo, burst into tears. The little boy is a huge fan of his dad's opponent. He became upset when the champion walked away quickly without seeing him, missing the chance to say hello or shake his hand.

The footage, filmed for an online documentary series, showed Ian Garry immediately hugging and comforting his crying son. Garry gently explained to the boy that Makhachev was just incredibly busy with interview requests, comparing it to his own packed schedule. The challenger then promised his son that they would find a way to meet the champion later in the week.

The pound-for-pound star clarified that he simply did not notice the young boy during all the chaos and crowd noise at the faceoff. Makhachev then made a public promise to meet the child before the weekend, saying he wants to make the young fan happy.
