Joe Rogan Warns UFC Star Ilia Topuria Against Rushing His Return

The commentator says the fighter needs six months to heal before starting to spar again

UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes Ilia Topuria needs a long break before returning to the Octagon. Topuria suffered his first career defeat nearly three months ago against Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250. During the violent four-round war, the former champion absorbed a massive amount of physical damage.

Medical reports and team statements later confirmed that Topuria suffered fractures to both orbital bones, a broken nose septum, and a broken foot. Because of these heavy injuries, Rogan stated on his podcast that the fighter will likely need a full six months away from the gym before he can even think about starting to spar again. The veteran broadcaster pointed out that an MMA fighter can only survive a few of these incredibly damaging wars over an entire career.

However, Rogan remains highly confident in Topuria's mental strength to bounce back. His main warning is that the young star must not rush his recovery. Rogan compared the situation to former champion Alexander Volkanovski, who famously hurried back to the cage too soon. After suffering a brutal head-kick knockout against Islam Makhachev, Volkanovski took a title fight (against Topuria) just four months later instead of resting. Because his brain had not fully healed, he was knocked out again and lost his belt. Rogan insists Topuria must learn from this mistake and heal completely first.
