UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has expressed his desire to defend his title before the holy month of Ramadan begins in February 2027. Speaking to Match TV, the pound-for-pound star clarified his current health status following recent medical evaluations.
Makhachev revealed that he underwent three MRI scans to thoroughly check his spine. While doctors identified a few minor issues, the champion emphasized that the situation is not serious. He is currently focusing on physical therapy and strengthening his back to ensure he is at peak performance.
The timeline is critical for Makhachev, who traditionally takes time off from competing to fast during Ramadan. With the religious period set to start in February, a return to the Octagon in early 2027 is his top priority. Makhachev is now waiting for the UFC to officialize a date and opponent for his next championship defense.
