Justin Gaethje Adapts Weight Strategy to Match Elite UFC Grapplers

The Lightweight Contender Added Muscle Mass to Counter Heavy Champions Like Makhachev

Justin Gaethje Adapts Weight Strategy to Match Elite UFC Grapplers

Former interim UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje has shifted his career strategy by bulking up for his recent bouts. Following definitive losses to elite grapplers Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira, Gaethje realized he needed more physical size. He observed that top-tier competitors, including current champion Islam Makhachev, routinely walk into the Octagon weighing around 180 pounds.

To bridge this strength gap, Gaethje altered his dietary habits. He now intentionally consumes excess calories to maintain a weight of 175 pounds until exactly seven days before a fight. This caloric surplus allows him to rebuild muscle mass and retain more power during the final weight cut.

The strategy has significantly increased his cage-night mass. Gaethje stated that he now typically arrives at the arena on fight night weighing approximately 181 pounds. After warming up and entering the cage, his weight stabilizes at around 177 pounds. This structural adjustment ensures he is no longer physically outmatched by the division's heaviest wrestlers.
