The head coach of welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry has strongly dismissed recent criticism regarding the fighter's behavior during his recent championship loss. Garry challenged pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev for the 170-pound belt at UFC 330 in August, falling short via unanimous decision after suffering a costly second-round knockdown from a head kick.
In the aftermath of the event, fans, commentators, and even UFC CEO Dana White criticized Garry for showing too much friendliness, including hugging and greeting Makhachev between rounds despite losing the fight. However, speaking to MMA Fighting, coach Diego Lima argued the backlash is completely overblown and had zero impact on the final scorecards.
"I don't think the hugs influenced anything at all," Lima explained, comparing Garry's sportsmanship to former champion Charles Oliveira. He emphasized that Garry is simply a polite, family-oriented man who respects his opponents.
With the title loss behind him, Garry is already looking forward, recently calling for a high-stakes title eliminator against the undefeated Michael Morales. Meanwhile, champion Makhachev is heavily rumored to face rising star Carlos Prates next, aiming for a quick return to the octagon before January 2027.
