Mauricio Ruffy Issues Statement Following Technical Knockout Loss

UFC lightweight contender Mauricio Ruffy has officially broken his silence following his first-round knockout loss to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 331. Entering the highly anticipated title eliminator with massive hype, the Brazilian striker was stopped by a brutal elbow and follow-up punches with just four seconds remaining in the opening round. Rather than making excuses for the setback, Ruffy shared a video statement on social media taking total accountability for the defeat.

Ruffy explained that his own defensive carelessness cost him the victory during a moment where he felt completely in control. "An important thing to say is that the mistake was totally mine. It was my fault, my carelessness, and his merit," Ruffy admitted. He revealed that when corner teammates shouted there were only ten seconds left in the round, he purposely relaxed on defense to save energy, expecting to easily secure a knockout victory in the second frame.
