Aljamain Sterling went off on plans by athletic commission leader Andy Foster and UFC boss Dana White to ban oblique kicks. The push-style kick to the opponent's knee has been a major topic of debate in the sport. Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Sterling argued that changing the rules makes absolutely no sense right now.
Sterling explained that mixed martial arts has much bigger problems that officials are completely ignoring. He pointed out that referees and commissions are not even enforcing the rules they already have, like stopping fighters from poking eyes or holding the cage. "Fix the things that are already illegal before you start making new rules," Sterling stated during the interview, demanding better accountability for referees.
The former champion believes that if officials cannot correctly judge the current rulebook, adding more restrictions will only cause more confusion inside the cage. He argued that oblique kicks are a fair part of fighting and should stay legal until the basic safety rules are managed properly.
