Ben Askren Returns to Competitive Wrestling Just One Year After a Life-saving Transplant

"Funky" Ben is lacing up the boots for a special homecoming bout at RAF 11.

Former Olympic wrestler and MMA champion Ben Askren is making a shocking return to the mats this summer, defying the odds just a year after a severe illness nearly took his life. Askren will lace up his boots for a special, one-off wrestling match against former UFC Welterweight Champion Belal Muhammad at RAF 11 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 18, 2026.

The date and location hold immense personal significance for the Wisconsin native. Around this time last year, Askren was finally discharged from the hospital after a brutal battle with an infection that ultimately required a life-saving double lung transplant. While most assumed his athletic career was permanently over—prompting him to take on a behind-the-scenes role with the Real American Freestyle (RAF) promotion—his remarkable recovery allowed him to get back into training shape far ahead of schedule.

The high-profile matchup will share the spotlight on a massive card headlined by Arman Tsarukyan and Colby Covington. For Askren, who turns 42 on the night of the event, this marks his first time competing since his 2021 boxing match against Jake Paul.

It won't be an easy night back, as the 38-year-old Muhammad is still actively competing at the highest level of the UFC. However, Askren has been vocal that this hometown appearance is strictly a one-time celebration of his survival before he hangs up his competitive gear for good.
