Ryan Garcia captured his first WBC welterweight world title after clearly outclassing Mario Barrios on February 21 in Las Vegas, winning by unanimous decision – 120-107, 119-108, and 118-109. The victory came after a dominant performance in which Garcia’s speed, timing, and composure proved decisive.

The 30-year-old Barrios was knocked down in the opening round and never managed to find an answer to his opponent’s accurate and fast combinations for the remainder of the fight. The champion tried to push the action with constant pressure and forward movement, but his attacks rarely found the target, while Garcia steadily piled up points with clean shots. In the second half of the bout, the new champion lowered the pace and visibly began to conserve energy, but his control of the fight remained complete.

Barrios showed heart and lasted until the final bell, but that was not enough against the more skilled and faster opponent. Garcia’s convincing victory, which came after his loss to Rolando Romero last year, has naturally reignited interest in a potential rematch with the division’s WBO champion Devin Haney — a clash that is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated in the weight class.
