New WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia has no plans to face WBO welterweight champion Shakur Stevenson in an intermediate division. If Stevenson does not agree to move up in weight, Garcia will focus on organizing a rematch with WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney.
Garcia called out Stevenson immediately after his victory over Mario Barrios, and Stevenson responded that he is only willing to fight at 145 pounds (65 kg).
“The rematch with Haney is definitely far more important than a fight with Shakur Stevenson; it’s not even worth comparing,” said the champion’s father, Henry Garcia, to MillCity Boxing. “For Stevenson to face Ryan, he has to move up to welterweight. Didn’t Crawford move up to super middleweight for his fight with Canelo? He deserves respect for that too.”
“Why can’t Shakur move up a division to fight Ryan? He wants Ryan to agree to fight in a higher weight class. We can fight under the welterweight limit if it makes sense, but I doubt that’s the case for a bout with Stevenson,” added Garcia Sr.
