Jordan Morejon (90 kg category) has made a strong start to his participation in the World Boxing Cup tournament in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil.
In a second preliminary round match in the heaviest weight class, Cuban-born Morejon won 4:1 by judges' vote over Mexican Javier Cruz. The Bulgarian national won all three rounds of the match, being particularly convincing at the end of the fight and leaving no doubt about his superiority to four of the five judges at ringside.
In the quarterfinals, Morejon will have a difficult task against world vice-champion Jahongir Zokirov from Uzbekistan, who started with a successful unanimous decision over Romanian Florin Ionitsa.
Another Bulgarian representative - Victorio Iliev, however, was eliminated from the competition. In a very even fight in the 65 kg category, he lost 2:3 by judges' vote to Hugo Baron from Mexico.
Iliev took the first two rounds with a score of 3:2 by the judges. In the final third round, however, Baron stepped up and managed to impose his will, which led the judges to choose him as the winner.
Later today, three more Bulgarians will take to the ring in Foz do Iguaçu.
In the women's 54 kg category, Venelina Poptoleva will fight for a place in the quarterfinals against Lauren McKee from England. In the evening session, Ergunal Sebahtin will face Dani Caceres from the Dominican Republic in the 50 kg category, and in the 80 kg category, William Cholov will face Josh Ofori from Canada.
