Headlining a highly anticipated Matchroom Boxing card at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, the 26-year-old phenom dismantled reigning WBA bantamweight titleholder Antonio Vargas with a clinical sixth-round stoppage.
A Tactical Adjustment to Power
Stepping up to the 118-pound division for the very first time, Rodriguez (24-0, 17 KOs) faced a physically larger, highly motivated opponent in Vargas (19-2-1). The opening rounds saw the former 2016 Olympian, Vargas, start aggressively, landing clean combinations and utilizing his volume punching to disrupt Rodriguez’s rhythm. Rodriguez later acknowledged that Vargas possessed significantly more strength and "pop" than he had initially anticipated.
However, the southpaw's elite ring IQ quickly turned the tide. Rodriguez adjusted his footwork, dictating the distance and finding precise counter-punching windows through Vargas’ guard. The breakthrough materialized late in the fifth round when Rodriguez unleashed a devastating overhand left that sent Vargas crashing to the canvas. Though Vargas intelligently smothered Rodriguez to survive the round, the damage was definitively done.
The Structural Finish and Beyond
Rodriguez wasted zero time in the sixth frame, immediately hunting for the finish. He feinted a downstairs punch to lower Vargas' guard, subsequently connecting with a brutal right hook to the chin and a straight left hand. The combination sent Vargas onto his back, unable to beat the referee's count at the 0:34 mark.
The victory extends Rodriguez's consecutive knockout streak to six. With the WBA belt secured, the boxing world eagerly anticipates a potential mega-unification bout against WBO ruler Christian Medina, or an ultimate pound-for-pound showdown with Japan's undisputed super bantamweight king, Naoya Inoue.
