Andy Ruiz Signs with Matchroom, Set for Ring Return

Former heavyweight world champion Andy Ruiz Jr. is one step closer to making his long-awaited return to the ring. The 36-year-old Mexican-American has officially signed a long-term promotional deal with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing.

Ruiz made it clear that his ultimate goal is to climb back to the top of the heavyweight division.

"I'm excited and grateful to Matchroom for helping me on my mission to become a two-time world champion for Mexico. I'm thankful to God for giving me a second chance to do things the right way. Sometimes God puts you through challenges to make you a better man and a better fighter," Ruiz said.

Ironically, it was under the Matchroom banner that Ruiz produced one of the greatest upsets in heavyweight boxing history. In 2019, he stunned the boxing world by knocking out Anthony Joshua in New York to capture the unified heavyweight world titles.

Promoter Eddie Hearn believes Ruiz still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

"I'm delighted to welcome Andy back to the team. The heavyweight division is constantly evolving, and a focused and motivated Andy Ruiz is a nightmare for anyone. If the Andy who beat Joshua returns, there's no doubt he can become a world champion again."

However, Ruiz lost the rematch to Joshua in December 2019 and has fought only three times since then, with his most recent appearance coming in August 2024.

Now, the Mexican-American begins a new chapter in his career after reuniting with longtime trainer Manny Robles. He is expected to return to the ring on September 4 in Newark, where he will face undefeated Polish heavyweight Damian Knyba in his first fight under the Matchroom Boxing banner.
