Hrgović Stops Itauma to Win IBF World Heavyweight Title

The Croatian survived a strong start from the Briton before forcing a ninth-round stoppage

Filip Hrgović produced an impressive comeback against 21-year-old Moses Itauma in the main event of the boxing card in London. The Croatian endured heavy pressure early on and was even knocked down in the second round, but gradually turned the fight around.

Itauma maintained an advantage with his speed and accuracy throughout the following rounds, but he was unable to inflict enough significant damage on his opponent. Hrgović began finding increasing success as the fight progressed, while by the end of the eighth round the British heavyweight was visibly exhausted. Hrgović stepped up the pressure in the ninth, eventually forcing Itauma’s corner to throw in the towel.

Hrgović was declared the winner by technical knockout at 2:27 of the ninth round, capturing the vacant IBF heavyweight title. With the victory, he became the first Croatian in history to win a world heavyweight championship.

“I was losing every round, my opponent was outboxing me, and I don’t know where I found the energy to win,” Hrgović said after the fight.
