Conor McGregor opens as sizable favorite in potential fight against Justin Gaethje

Connor McGregor still doesn’t have his next fight booked but if he ends up facing Justin Gaethje, the former two-division UFC champion would open as a sizable favorite.

As the entire mixed martial arts world waits out the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many fighters have started looking ahead towards summer dates in hopes that major sporting events will be booked again by that time.

Recently, McGregor’s longtime striking coach Owen Roddy suggested that a fight against Gaethje could be a possibility as the Irish superstar hoped to keep a busy schedule in 2020 after finishing Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in less than a minute back in January.

Now according to the oddsmakers at BetOnline.ag, McGregor would definitely be favored to win that fight.

Conor McGregor: -180

Justin Gaethje: +155

Based on the opening odds for that potential fight, McGregor would be the favorite at -180 with Gaethje as the underdog at +155. That means betters would have to put down $180 on McGregor to win $100 if he was successful in the fight against Gaethje.

There has been a lot of interest in that fight as the rest of the top lightweights in the UFC have been booked for other matchups.

Reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is still scheduled to face Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 on April 18. Meanwhile, former interim champion Dustin Poirier was just recently matched up with Dan Hooker at an event in San Diego in May.

Based on the current UFC rankings that leaves only McGregor and Gaethje as top five fighters without opponents.

McGregor had previously mentioned the fight as a possible matchup when he was working towards his return to action earlier this year. Gaethje has made it clear that he’s definitely interested in fighting McGregor.

Now it’s up to the UFC on whether or not they’ll pit McGregor against Gaethje later this year.
