Gamboa’s Achilles rupture confirmed, severity still a question

Lightweight veteran Yuriorkis Gamboa said after Saturday’s loss to Gervonta Davis that he thought he’d ruptured his right Achilles tendon in the second round of the fight, and ESPN reports that after an MRI, that fear is confirmed. What’s still in question, according to Gamboa adviser Tony Gonzalez, is the severity.

“There is a rupture,” Gonzalez told ESPN. “They just don’t know how bad it is yet. A lot of people have reached out to us after what they saw Saturday because they don’t know how he was able to keep fighting, but he’s a warrior.”

Gamboa (30-3, 18 KO) fought bravely despite being overmatched by a younger, far fresher opponent. Hopefully the injury is as minor as it can be, but either way, Gamboa’s 38 years old and the clock is ticking on his career period, let alone the part of his career where he’s going to get more major fights.
