Hidetora Hanada claims the amateur yokozuna title

Nippon Sports Science University’s Hidetora Hanada was crowned the new amateur yokozuna at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan on December 6.

Hanada, 19, became the first student from NSSU to achieve such glory since Masatsugu Onishi (later known as Yoshikaze) in 2002.

Hanada is also the first college freshman who wins the All Japan Sumo Championships since Keita Kushima in 1986. Thanks to his triumph the wrestler is now eligible to join professional sumo near the top of the third division and just outside the salaried ranks.
