Inoue dealing with fractured orbital after war with Nonito Donaire

Naoya Inoue did not come out of his Thursday war with Nonito Donaire unscathed. In addition to a fractured nose, “The Monster” suffered a fractured orbital that could delay his Top Rank debut.

The good news:

Inoue said he would not require surgery to repair either fracture and that he will be reexamined by his doctor in a month to asses his progress.

”Then I will decide my training schedule thereafter,” Inoue said in translated remarks, adding that his plans for a spring fight in the United States would have to be delayed.

Inoue and Donaire (40-6, 26 KO) dished out some ridiculous damage during their twelfth-round battle, Inoue with his famed body attack and Donaire with his legendary left hook. One of said hooks opened a cut on Inoue in the second round and, considering that Inoue began suffering double vision afterwards, it’s likely that same punch caused the orbital fracture.

The 26-year-old had intended to fight thrice in 2020 and has a heap of intriguing potential opponents, including Zolani Tete, Nordine Oubaali, and Luis Nery. With any luck, we won’t have to wait long to see him back in action.

In the meantime, Japan always offers loads of quality boxing around New Year’s Eve, so we won’t be starved of content while he recovers.
