Joshua vs. Usyk will have a rematch clause

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn, the promoter of the unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, has declared that the upcoming fight between the Brit and Oleksandr Usyk will have a rematch clause.

Joshua, who holds the WBO, IBF and the WBA “Super” belts will be facing the Ukrainian boxer this fall. Usyk, 34, is the mandatory WBO challenger and usually, mandatories don’t get rematch clauses.

That was the case back in 2019 when Joshua shockingly lost to Andy Ruiz, but thanks to his rematch clause, he got his belts back six months later.

“There will be a rematch clause. All the terms are agreed… when you talk about a rematch clause that’s also the biggest fight that a fighter could have,” Hearn told Boxing Social.

“So sometimes people think ‘oh that’s a bad thing’, it’s actually sometimes a good thing. Andy Ruiz ended up actually getting quite a lot of money for his rematch, but it’s a massive opportunity, if Oleksandr Usyk wins he makes an absolute fortune to fight AJ again.”

Of course, the only realistic chance of seeing a rematch between those two is if the former undisputed cruiserweight champion manages to get the W in the first bout, that is being scheduled for September 25 in London.
