Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. misses weight for Anderson Silva boxing match

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is up to his old tricks.

Chavez Jr. missed weight for his scheduled boxing match against UFC legend Anderson Silva, tipping the scales at 184.4 pounds for the 182-pound bout at Friday’s weigh-ins, which took place in Guadalajara, Mexico. MMA Fighting confirmed the news.

As a result, Chavez Jr. will forfeit $100,000 of his purse to Silva, who successfully hit the 182-pound limit. Fight Hub TV first reported the miss.

“I’ve been a combat sports professional for over 20 years,” Silva wrote on Instagram. “I’ve always accomplished my duties inside and outside of the ring. The contractual weight for tomorrow’s fight is 182lbs, which I accomplished through months of hard work alongside my team. Unfortunately my opponent came in at 184.4lbs. Despite this, I will still put on a great show for you all.”

Video of the weigh-ins can be seen below.

This isn’t the first time for Chavez Jr. The 35-year-old son of legendary pugilist Julio César Chávez infamously forfeited $1 million for missing weight by nearly five pounds in a 2019 bout against Daniel Jacobs. Chavez Jr. weighed in at 172.7 pounds for the super middleweight bout, which was contracted for 168 pounds.

Friday’s weigh-in botch is just the latest in a long line of problems to plague Chavez Jr.’s career. The boxer has been suspended multiple times in the past for failed drug tests, among other issues.

Silva vs. Chavez Jr. is a scheduled to be an eight-round bout that takes place Saturday in Guadalajara, Mexico. The card also features an exhibition match between 58-year-old Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Hector Camacho Jr.

Silva and Chavez Jr. will compete with 10-ounce gloves.

Silva is 1-1 in his boxing career but last competed in boxing in 2005. Chavez Jr. holds a record of 52-5-1 but has lost five of his last 11 bouts.
