Teofimo Lopez says he’ll “be a free agent” soon

Teofimo Lopez is none too pleased with Top Rank after last week’s purse bid debacle, which saw the promoter come in third behind Triller and Matchroom for the rights to his clash with IBF mandatory challenger George Kambosos Jr. He tells Sirius XM’s “Ak and Barak” that he sees himself becoming a free agent “within maybe this fight or [his] next fight.”

FightSports.tv has a transcript:

“Yeah, I see myself within maybe this fight or my next fight, I’ll be a free agent. There’s so much proof for me to get out of this Top Rank contract that they gave me the golden ticket. Todd DuBoef gave me the golden ticket by doing so. They already dug a bigger hole than they needed to.

“The Takeover Promotions will be in effect and it’ll be Takeover Promotions times a network, God willing and that’s what I’m looking forward to. ESPN, PBC, Triller, the list could go on and on. DAZN, I mean there’s so many guys and I know that I bring all that to the platform.”

Lopez (16-0, 12 KO) is referring to an email from DuBoef wherein the Top Rank president excoriated the “DAZN brass” for allowing Hearn to make a bid. Is that actually sufficient to get him out of his contract? Seeing as I’ve never seen the contract and am an idiot, I can’t say, but I can’t imagine Top Rank’s lawyers making it that easy to wriggle out of.
