Tyson Fury says he now plans to fight until he’s 40

We know that WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has been pretty erratic when discussing the future of his boxing career in the past, often mentioning that he was looking towards retirement, but now the 31-year-old fighter tells ESPN that he has no plans to call it quits anytime soon, saying he wants to fight until the age of 40.

“I’m going to fight on ‘til I’m 40 years old,” he told ESPN on Thursday. “I’ve been thinking about it, and there isn’t much else to do anyways. So yeah, I may as well keep fighting. I don’t see anyone out there that can challenge me anyway. I just flattened the best one out there, the toughest opponent out there is Deontay Wilder, and we all saw what happened to him the last time out.”

It wasn’t even two full months ago when Fury was quoted as saying he was just about ready to pack up his bags and ride off into the sunset, but I suppose every person is entitled to have a change of heart.

Fury, while contractually obligated to hold a third fight against Deontay Wilder, has recently been exploring the possibility of facing Anthony Joshua for the ever-elusive undisputed heavyweight title. The early-stage talks reference the fight being held in the Middle East, but it seems pretty clear that Fury will still have to deal with Wilder first, one way or another.

As that currently stands, the logistics for staging a third Fury-Wilder fight remain up in the air as global travel restrictions are currently preventing either fighter from taking a trip across the pond and it’s not clear when those restrictions will be lifted. And that’s not even to speak of how they could potentially make the finances of the fight work should there be no live gate as a revenue stream — which is probably even a bigger hurdle. Even still, the currently idea is that the Fury-Wilder 3 will be staged sometime late in the year but much like everything else concerning coronavirus, it’s a bit of a moving target.
