UWW announces Los Angeles 2028 qualification system

The International Wrestling Federation (UWW) has announced the qualification system for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

For the largest sports forum on the planet, there will be 16 competitors in each category, who will qualify through 4 qualification competitions. Namely:

1. All medalists from the 2027 World Championships will receive quotas (gold, silver, two bronze) or 72 visas will be distributed in the 18 Olympic categories.

2. The following is the ranking list, according to which UWW will rank the three best wrestlers in each category who have not passed the first stage of the qualifications.

The ranking list is formed according to the ranking of 7 competitions before the games.
– continental championship in 2027,
– rating tournaments in the same year (3 competitions),
– world championship in 2027,
– rating tournament in 2028 (1 competition),
– continental championship in 2028.

Thus, according to the ranking list, 54 athletes will receive quotas for the respective National Olympic Committee (NOC). The quotas are not named, but are given to the country, which can replace the athlete who won it with another.

3. Two quotas will be received from the continental championships in each category, that is, the finalists acquire the right to participate in the games.
144 visas will be distributed from the continental championships.

4. The World Olympic Qualification is the final phase. Only the winners in the 18 categories will receive visas.
Only athletes who do not currently have visas have the right to participate. Thus, quotas will be distributed for each category as follows:

4 quotas – World Championship 2027

3 quotas – UWW rankings

8 quotas – Continental qualifications (2 Europe, 2 Asia, 2 Pan America, 2 Africa and Oceania)

1 quota – World Olympic Qualification

In the rating tournaments, each country can participate with a maximum of two wrestlers in each category, with a tolerance of 2 kg of permissible weight. For the world and continental championships, the standard rules apply.

A change is also forthcoming in the awarding of points in the rankings.
