Vasiliy Lomachenko nearing deal to face Richard Commey on December 11 at Madison Square Garden

After his thoroughly dominating performance against Masayoshi Nakatani in his last appearance, former pound-for-pound king Vasiliy Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs) could find himself back in the ring by the end of the year as ESPN reports he’s in advanced talks to face former IBF titleholder Richard Commey (30-3, 27 KOs) on December 11 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The proposed card would also feature middleweight Edgar Berlanga fighting in a co-featured bout.

By these reports it seems that Lomachenko will be fighting December 11 following the ESPN Heisman Trophy presentation whether or not he and Commey finalize this deal. This particular time slot offers excellent visibility for fighters and Top Rank looks to take full advantage as Lomachenko has twice before fought in this slot when beat Guillermo Rigondeaux and Jose Pedraza in years past.

Should this fight cross the finish line it will be Commey’s first fight since February when he knocked out Jackson Marinez. Both Lomachenko and Commey have common defeats to unified titleholder Teofimo Lopez and it’s well known that Lomachenko in particular has designs on rematching Lopez, but with Lopez currently tied into a fight with George Kambosos Jr this might just be the next best thing for Loma in the interim.
