WBC postpones Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildirim purse bid to October 6

The ongoing Canelo saga has quite a few moving parts, many of them very stupid, but none nearly as stupid as the WBC scheduling a purse bid between him and Avni Yildirim for their vacant super middleweight title. Today was supposed to be the big day, but the sanctioning body has pushed it back to October 6th.

Normally, purse bids get delayed when the relevant parties are on track to make a deal and request additional time to iron out the final details. This announcement gives no reason for the change in date, only mentioning that England’s TUFF Promotions registered to participate.

While I’m certain that this is all just hot air from Sulaiman and co., I’ll admit to not seeing what they stand to gain. All I can think is that when Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KO) inevitably ignores the order the way Gilberto Ramirez and Jessie Magdaleno did, they’ll have pretext to hand David Benavidez another crack at the title he lost on the scales earlier this year. Or maybe #3 David Lemieux.
