Yokozuna Kakuryu will return at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament

Yokozuna Kakury, a six-time Emperor’s Cup winner and one of the finest sumo wrestlers of our times, will probably return to action this month at the upcoming Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

This year the Haru Basho will be taking place in Tokyo because of the COVID-19 restrictions in Japan. The event will be held from March 14th to March 28th at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan.

The Mongolian-born who won the tournament back in 2014 and 2018 missed the last three Honbashos because of injury.

“It’s time to compete,” the 35-year-old Kakuryu, who has long been dealing with elbow and lower back pain, told reporters. “Whether I can focus on my sumo — it all comes down to that.”
