UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov insists he is training as per usual in anticipation of his fight with Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 this next month.
MMA fans have seen four previously scheduled fights between the two lightweights called off across the last few years and fear it could happen for a fifth time, with a host of sporting events affected by the worldwide Covid-19 outbreak.
Most European countries had suspended their football, basketball and other championships until April at the very earliest, the NBA is on hold, all tennis tournaments, the start of the Formula One season was postponed and The Masters – the first major on the golf calendar – pushed back indefinitely.
US President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency to help handle the coronavirus outbreak, while the Governor of New York – where UFC 249 will take place – has issued a state-wide ban on gatherings of over 500 people.
The fight will therefore either be conducted behind closed doors, postponed, or moved to a different location – with the UFC Apex complex in Las Vegas a potential venue.
