IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin will be returning to boxing in a fight against his mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta.
The Kazakh fighter announced the news himself in an interview with Sports Illustrated, admitting that the 30-year-old Polish fighter is the rightful challenger.
“I made a commitment before all this situation with coronavirus happened. I’m talking about my fight with Szeremeta. I intend to keep my word. Once the situation changes, as soon as everything is back to normal, I intend to have this fight first.”
That being said, a potential trilogy with Canelo Alvarez is not out of the picture, but father time is undefeated and there is a big chance fans will not want to see this fight in 2021.
GGG has also said that the people representing Canelo are the ones who delayed the third fight between them.
“I should point out that there is always two sides,” Golovkin said. “They actually avoided this fight in September. They didn’t want to fight in May of 2020. So I went my way. I have my own career, and I figured: How long should I wait?”
Golovkin’s last fight was held in October when he defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko via UD, but a lot of people weren’t happy with the decision and felt Golovkin was slow and not aggressive enough.
