A rematch between former strawweight champion Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas is currently in the works for the upcoming UFC event on July 11.
Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed to MMA Fighting that verbal agreements are in place for the matchup, though no contracts have been issued or signed at this time. Combate initially reported the fight.
The fight was originally expected to take place at UFC 249 in April, but Namajunas dropped off the card after two of her family members died after contracting COVID-19 . The entire card was later scrapped and moved to May, but neither Andrade or Namajunas fought that night.
Now it appears the strawweights are ready to get back to business as Namajunas seeks to avenge her prior defeat to Andrade in 2019.
On that night, Namajunas came out with a strong start in the opening round, but Andrade reversed her fortune after she slammed the former Ultimate Fighter finalist down to the ground with a violent slam that left her unconscious.
Namajunas hasn’t appeared since that loss, while Andrade came up short in her first title defense after falling to current strawweight champion Zhang Weili.
Andrade and Namajunas are now expected to meet in July with the winner likely cementing the No. 1 contender spot in the 115-pound division.
