Vasiliy Lomachenko expected to arrive in US this month

WBA/WBO lightweight titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko has been home in the Ukraine during the COVID-19 lockdown, but Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is expecting the fighter to make his way to the United States this month, according to ESPN.com.

The 32-year-old Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KO) was supposed to fight IBF titlist Teofimo Lopez (15-0, 12 KO) on ESPN pay-per-view just last weekend; that fight never got officially signed, but May 30 was the working date by all reports. That, of course, was called off, and now Arum has said he is working to put the fight on in September, with or without fans in attendance.

The fight probably was going to be and likely still will be marketed as an “undisputed” title fight, since Lomachenko has the WBC’s dumb “franchise” title, but Devin Haney is the WBC lightweight titleholder, so there would certainly be someone out there with a valid dispute. And that’s all the doing of the WBC and Top Rank/Lomachenko and Haney combined, so it is what it is. But either way, Lomachenko-Lopez was a highly-anticipated fight for May and still will be for September, so hopefully Loma can get over here and we can get the fight scheduled finally.
