IBF super middleweight titleholder Caleb Plant suffered a minor hand injury in his January win over mandatory challenger Caleb Truax, but said on the Ruiz-Arreola broadcast on Saturday night that he’s back training and will be ready to potentially face the Canelo-Saunders winner in September.
“Hand’s feeling good, healing up. Had to get a small incision made, but nothing major,” he said. “I’m already in the gym and healing up. (I’ll be ready) for September, so hopefully we can get everything worked out and get the fans the first undisputed super middleweight champion of all time.”
Not to put words in his mouth, but Plant (21-0, 12 KO) would almost surely rather Canelo Alvarez win when he fights Billy Joe Saunders on May 8, which will unify the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles at super middleweight. Not only would it be a much bigger fight in terms of money and prestige, but it seems very possible that Canelo and Saunders would immediately rematch if Saunders does pull the upset.
On that note, though, Plant says he’s ready for either man.
“If everything works out (it’ll be Canelo), but regardless of who I have to fight, I want to be the first undisputed super middleweight champion,” he said.
