Video: Jacare Souza undergoes successful humerus surgery

Ronaldo Souza is on the road to recovery.

The longtime middleweight contender suffered a nasty break at UFC 262 on Saturday when opponent Andre Muniz caught him in an armbar that ended up injuring “Jacare.” Souza’s doctor Rickson Moraes later told MMA Fighting that the 41-year-old had fractured his right humerus and would require surgery.

On Monday, Souza’s coach Josuel Distak shared a video on Instagram featuring a smiling Souza following a successful surgery at a hospital in Houston, the city where Saturday’s event took place
According to Moraes, the surgery was determined to be an urgent procedure, which necessitated the work being done in the United States as opposed to back in Souza’s native Brazil.

The first-round technical submission loss to Muniz was the fourth straight for Souza, a former Strikeforce champion and longtime contender in the UFC’s middleweight division. He has not scored a victory since a knockout of Chris Weidman at UFC 230 in November 2018.

No timetable has been given for Souza’s return to competition.
