As first reported by Keith Idec and later confirmed by Mike Coppinger, veteran Yuriorkis Gamboa is out of his July 3rd Showtime main event against WBA interim super featherweight champion Chris Colbert with an injured rib.
Colbert (15-0, 6 KO) had some unkind words for his stricken foe.
For the record, I don’t think a man who’s fought Orlando Salido, Terence Crawford, Gervonta Davis, and Devin Haney would fake an injury to get out of fighting Chris Colbert.
That said, this isn’t a fight that needed to happen in the first place. Colbert is coming off a dominant mauling of Jaime Arboleda, while Gamboa (30-4, 18 KO) has won maybe five of his last 24 rounds. The ideal outcome would see the WBA call up someone who’s actually ranked, but Gilberto Mendoza and co. don’t even pretend follow their own rules at this point, so expect an even more grievous mismatch to take shape by fight night.
