Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant appear headed for a Sept. 18 undisputed super middleweight championship showdown.
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger Tweeted this evening that Canelo has been sent a draft contract for the bout, and details are “still in the process of being finalized.” It’s not a done deal, but it’s looking very close indeed.
Canelo (56-1-2, 38 KO) won the WBA and WBC titles last December when he beat Callum Smith, and added the WBO by beating Billy Joe Saunders in May, thrashing Avni Yildirim in February between those bouts.
Plant (21-0, 12 KO) won the IBF title in Jan. 2019, beating Jose Uzcategui, and has made successful defenses against Mike Lee, Vincent Feigenbutz, and Caleb Truax. Needless to say, Canelo would be a huge step up for him.
If the fight gets done, prior reports indicated it would be a one-fight deal with Canelo and Premier Boxing Champions, with the fight airing as a PBC pay-per-view, Canelo’s first time on PPV since Sept. 2018, as he’s had all of his fights on DAZN since then.
