Wrestling at the 2020 Olympics has officially started and two-time Olympian Daniel Cormier is more than ready to see if the United States can come home with multiple gold medals in 2021.
As a two-time Olympian himself, Cormier obviously has a vested interest in the U.S. team and he’ll break down the main players from the men’s freestyle team with competition kicking off this week.
Four-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake will be making his first appearance at the Olympics after he vanquished 2012 gold medalist Jordan Burroughs to earn the right to represent the U.S. at 74kg this year. Dake is one of the heavy favorites to stand on the podium with a gold medal around his neck but he faces some stiff competition from his weight class.
At 97kg, 2016 gold medalist Kyle Snyder will return in hopes of winning a second time but he’ll have a massive roadblock awaiting him should he make it to the finals as Russian mauler Abdulrashid Sadulaev will be sitting on the other side of the bracket. Snyder and Sadulaev have split a pair of meetings in the past in the wrestling World Championships but this is the first time they could potentially clash at the Olympics.
This is arguably the most highly anticipated weight division at the 2020 Olympic games with many predicting an epic showdown between Snyder and Sadulaev in the gold medal match.
At heavyweight, 21-year-old phenom Gable Steveson will seek to pull off an upset and claim gold in his category after demolishing the competition in the U.S. trials. Steveson won the NCAA title at heavyweight this past season and he’s regarded as one of the best prospects in all of wrestling across the globe.
Of course, Cormier will also breakdown the chances that the U.S. could walk out with multiple gold medals not to mention the possibility that there’s a medal handed out in every weight division represented at the Olympic games this year.
Get ready for wrestling at the 2020 Olympic games with this special preview from Cormier as competition in the men’s divisions gets underway this week.
