Bellator 270 results: Patricky Pitbull KOs Peter Queally to capture lightweight title

The Bellator lightweight title remains with one of the “Pitbull” brothers.

In the main event of Bellator 270, Patricky Freire took on Peter Queally for the vacant 155-pound title. The event took place at the 3Arena in Dublin with a raucous crowd packed in. Patricio Freire vacated the title to open the door for his brother to fight for the title in a rematch from Queally’s doctor’s stoppage TKO win at Bellator 258 in May.

Things opened up on the feet for the entire round. Freire walked forward with punches, while Queally kept things at range with kicks to the body and legs. Freire focused on the body with power strikes to seemingly pull ahead early.

The second round began with a nasty eye poke from Queally but “Pitbull” battled through the pain to continue on. Freire then rocked Queally with a big shot as the fight resumed and poured it on to get the stoppage to become the new lightweight champion.

With the win, the series is tied at one win apiece, which could lead to a potential trilogy fight. Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor is certainly in favor of that.

Patchy Mix stuns crowd with submission win

Patchy Mix ended a tough fight week with a stoppage victory in enemy territory.

In the co-main event, Mix took on rival James Gallagher in a highly anticipated matchup. The former bantamweight title challenger missed weight on Thursday ahead of the bout, but he made the walk into the hostile crowd, while Gallagher had one of the best walkouts of the year amid his Irish fans leading into the biggest fight of his career.

The opening round saw both fighters attempt guillotines that didn’t get the job done. It was a very close first round as Gallagher was feeling the buzz of the crowd, while Mix came out somewhat flat. Momentum began to swing in Mix’s favor as he maintained ground control through most of the stanza.

Early in the third, Gallagher went for a takedown and Mix locked in a guillotine. Despite Gallagher’s attempts to defend, he began to weaken and Mix turned it over before forcing the tap to pick up his second straight victory.
